Plan updates as routine site maintenance. Keep a record of the versions you changed and test the site's important functions after each maintenance session. Hosting service does not, by itself, establish who manages application updates; check the scope of your plan.
The Control Center's WordPress tab shows applications tracked by Virtualmin. Use WordPress administration or available Virtualmin tools to perform updates. The inventory does not schedule maintenance, and the dashboard's Backups tab does not mean a recovery copy exists.
Prepare before an update #
- Take a current backup of files and the database, and confirm that you know how to restore it.
- Check free storage and read the update notes for your theme, plugins, and WordPress version.
- Test major changes on a staging site, particularly when you use custom code, memberships, or checkout.
- Choose a suitable maintenance window and avoid running competing update tools at the same time.
Apply and test updates #
Open Dashboard → Updates in WordPress. Follow the available update actions, making related changes in manageable groups so you can identify a problem. Respect any sequence the software vendor requires. Wait for each update to finish before refreshing or closing the page. WordPress update guide
Afterward, clear the relevant page cache and check your site while signed out. Test login, navigation, a contact form, and any purchase or subscription workflow using a safe test method. Verify that background actions still run and that you received the expected test email.
Review automatic-update settings for the components you use. Pair automated updates with working backups and failure notifications. Remove unused plugins after checking whether they hold data or support another feature; retain any fallback theme your maintenance process needs.
Routine checks between updates #
Check broken links, administrator accounts, backup results, certificate status, and storage growth. Review application health notices instead of relying only on the public home page. WordPress maintenance guide
Troubleshooting #
For a failed update, record the message and review the error log. If WordPress remains in maintenance mode, first confirm that no update is still running; follow the official recovery steps rather than deleting files during an active update.
If a change breaks the site, use your documented rollback procedure. Restoring an older database can discard orders or posts created since the backup, so reconcile recent activity before restoring production data. Ask support for hosting errors and the software vendor or developer for application-specific failures.
