A transfer lock helps prevent the domain from moving to another registrar. An authorization code, sometimes called an EPP or AuthInfo code, is a secret used during eligible transfers. Neither is your website or email password.
- Open My Account > Domains and select the domain. These controls require a domain managed here; for an external domain, use its current registrar.
- Open Lock & privacy and check Transfer lock. Leave it on when no transfer is planned.
- To prepare an eligible transfer, select Off, choose Update transfer lock, and reread the saved status.
- Open Contacts & verification and choose Get transfer authorization code if offered.
- Store or paste the displayed code securely into the intended registrar's transfer process. Do not publish it in a ticket screenshot or send it with an unrelated support request.
- If you decide against transferring and no transfer is in progress, turn the ordinary transfer lock back on and verify the saved state.
Understand other restrictions: The account switch controls an ordinary registrar lock. It cannot override every registry or policy restriction. Recent registration, a recent transfer, certain registrant changes, disputes, or a domain's current lifecycle state can require separate handling. Ask support for the reason and next eligible date rather than repeatedly toggling the setting. The rules for covered generic extensions are described by ICANN's transfer policy.
If a code does not work: Confirm that it belongs to the exact domain and was copied without surrounding spaces. Ask the current registrar whether it has been replaced or whether another requirement remains. Do not post the code publicly while troubleshooting.
If a code has been exposed: Contact support promptly and request review. The customer area does not promise self-service code regeneration. Ask staff to check the transfer state as well as the code.
Verify success: Reopen the security section to confirm the lock state. Retrieving a code by itself does not start a transfer, and disabling the lock does not move your website.
