Use mailbox sign-in controls when you need to temporarily prevent access to an eligible mail-only account. Pausing preserves existing messages and does not change email delivery routing. It is separate from deleting a mailbox, forwarding its mail, changing its password, or suspending the whole hosting service.
Your hosting service must be active, paid, and unexpired, with email management permitted. The dashboard can manage mail-only users; accounts with FTP, database, or other additional access require Virtualmin or support.
- Open Hosting services in Control Center. Choose Manage website for the domain, then Email. Check the domain heading before changing an address that may also exist on another website.
- Find the mailbox and confirm its address and Mailbox username. An eligible enabled mailbox offers Pause mailbox sign-in. Expand that section.
- Read and select the confirmation stating that existing messages are not deleted and delivery routing will not change. Select Pause sign-in once, then wait for the result.
- Refresh the mailbox list if needed and check that its state is Disabled. If the result cannot be confirmed, inspect the current state before another attempt or contact support.
- To reverse a pause made through this dashboard, expand Restore mailbox sign-in, select the confirmation, and choose Restore sign-in. The control restores access using the mailbox's existing password; it does not generate a replacement.
- After restoration, use Open webmail or an email app to make a fresh sign-in with the displayed username. Change the password separately if the previous one should no longer be used. Virtualmin's user password guide covers the advanced alternative.
Check the result: Verify the expected Enabled or Disabled state and test a new sign-in. For a security incident that also requires investigation or termination of existing sessions, contact support; do not treat this control as a complete incident response.
Common problems: Restore sign-in is available only for mailboxes paused here. A mailbox disabled by another process needs support review. Missing controls can also indicate additional account privileges or unverified permissions. Pausing does not free a mailbox slot, remove stored messages, change MX records, or send an out-of-office reply.
