Use Virtualmin's File Manager for small uploads, downloads, and text edits. File editing remains in Virtualmin rather than the Control Center. Open your service's Control panel access → Hosting login, sign in, and select the intended domain. For a larger transfer, use an encrypted file transfer connection if your plan includes one.
Find the correct website directory #
Select the domain, then open File Manager. The usual document root ends in public_html. A sub-server commonly has a separate directory beneath the parent's domains directory. Treat these as examples and confirm the selected domain's actual document root before changing files. Virtualmin website directory guide
Upload or change a file #
- Download a copy of any file you plan to replace. Store that copy outside your website's public directory.
- Open the target directory and use the upload action, often under Transfer. Select the intended files and review any overwrite prompt.
- For an archive, inspect its contents and extraction destination first. A package may contain an extra enclosing folder; the website's entry file must end up in the intended document root.
- To edit a text file, open its edit action, make the smallest necessary change, and save it. Use an application editor for ordinary page content when one is available.
- If you need a dotfile such as
.htaccess, enable the hidden-file display option if your interface hides it. Preserve dotfiles when moving a site.

Verify your upload #
Open the affected page and a directly uploaded image in a private browser window. Check filename spelling and capitalization: Logo.png and logo.png may resolve differently. Confirm that a generated backup, SQL export, or configuration copy is not available at a public URL.
Troubleshooting #
If you see the old page, check the chosen domain and directory before clearing caches. An index.html placeholder may take precedence over your application's entry page; back it up before removing it. For a failed upload, check available storage and the upload size limit. Avoid broad permission changes to fix one file.
