Most email apps can connect using IMAP for incoming mail and SMTP for outgoing mail. IMAP keeps mailbox folders synchronized across devices. In Control Center, open Hosting services → Manage website → Email. Copy the actual Mailbox username and read Sign in and connect an email app.
Use the Server hostname displayed there with the connection settings below. If the hostname is unavailable, contact support instead of guessing mail.yourdomain.com. These secure transport modes are described in RFC 8314.
| Purpose | Port shown in Control Center | Connection security |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming IMAP | 993 | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing SMTP | 587 | STARTTLS; authentication required |
- In the app, choose to add an account. Select Other, IMAP, or manual setup if automatic discovery does not find the supplied configuration.
- Enter your display name and email address. Use the displayed Mailbox username for authentication, with that mailbox's password. Do not use your Control Center or hosting-owner password.
- Set the incoming server to the hostname provided for your service, select IMAP, and use its supplied secure port and encryption setting.
- Configure outgoing SMTP separately. Enable authentication using the mailbox credentials, port 587, and STARTTLS. SSL/TLS and STARTTLS are different settings; do not switch to another port unless support provides it.
- Save and complete any connection test. Compare automatic settings with your service details if the app selected them for you. Thunderbird's manual configuration guide explains these individual fields.
- Confirm that Sent, Drafts, and Trash use the intended server folders. Check synchronization on a second device if you use more than one.
Check the result: Send a plain-text message to an external mailbox, reply, and confirm both messages appear. A successful incoming connection does not prove outgoing SMTP is configured correctly.
Common problems: Certificate warnings can indicate a wrong hostname or server configuration problem. Ask support to investigate; do not disable certificate verification. Check that mailbox sign-in is enabled and update stale saved passwords. For advanced settings, Virtualmin offers Edit Users → Show Email Client Settings where permitted.
